Skirt tutorial

Ok so I promised to do a skirt tutorial on the skirts I made so I tried to do a step by step picture tutorial cause that always helps me. It's a lot of picture so be prepared! One thing I have discovered about making Jersey knit skirts is they tend to stretch through out the day as you wear it. So keep that in mind when making this skirt that you might want to make it a tiny bit tighter then you want because it will stretch through out the day. I want you to know this took me like 30 min is all super easy!

All you need is scissors, straight pins, measuring tape, a yard of jersey knit fabric and a sewing machine.

First find a skirt you like or want to remake or that you like the fit of.
Skirt my sister in law wanted me to mimic

Find a Jersey knit fabric you like This one I got at hobby lobby for 6.99 a yard. You only need 1 yard for a knee length skirt.

Fold the yard in half so that it's inside out.

You will need your sewing machine, straight pins, measuring tape, and scissors.

If you didn't find a skirt you wanted to use then measure the width you want in this case I wanted 16 inches. Remember that you need to leave room for sewing so if you want a 16 inch in width i would measure 17-18 inches. Pin

and the length you want this was 22 inches long

Or in this case i laid the skirt i liked on the fabric and started pinning about 1/2 inch to 1 inch from the skirt to allow sewing room.

Cut along the pins

You should have plenty of fabric left over for the waist band

Cut along the folded seems as well this makes it easier to sew

Once it's cut out you should have something that looks like a skirt.

I like to do any of these 3 types of stitch it holds up way better

Begin to sew a side seem remember how much room you left to sew and use the sewing machine measurements as your guide.

Make sure to use tension while sewing jersey so you still have some stretch so I always hold it on the back side pulling tight

When you are done sewing the sides it should look like this.
Cut off excess fabric on the side

Messure your hem I normally do an inch hem. Fold it and pin it

It's easier to sew if you iron it down

Make sure it matches the length you want. In this case i ended needed to have more then a inch hem.

sew hem you can do just a straight stitch hem or you can stick to the stitch we have been doing.

Now your skirt is starting to look like a skirt. It's time to do the waist band.

Take your extra fabric and measure your waist band the same width as your skirt remember to leave extra sewing room I wanted 16inch waist band so I measured 17 inch that way it gives me 1/2 inch room to sew on each side.

Pin

For the waist band measure length to what you want. I wanted a 4 inch waist band so i know I needed 8 inches( you fold it in half) so I measured 9 to give myself sewing room.

Pin all the way around (17 inches by 9 inches) and cut it out

Sew your sides and cut excess fabric just like you did before.

Now fold the waist band fabric right side and fold your waist band in half. Matching side iron so it stays and is easier to sew.

Lay your waist band by your inside out skirt.

Flip the waist band to where your folded part of your waist band is facing down and being to place it inside your skirt.

Matching the open ends of the waist band and the skirt together. Start pinning

When your done pinning your waist band should be inside your skirt and should look like this.

Now sew the edges of the skirt and waist band together

When your done sewing pull your waist band out and it should look like this.

Turn your skirt right side out.

When you wear the skirt fold down your waist band like so.

And your done you have a finished skirt ready to wear!

Hope this makes sense if it doesn't feel free to ask!
